Party Wall Soundproofing

Typical party walls rate STC 30-40. Adding insulation, additional layers of drywall, and damping compounds can net STC ratings in the low to mid 50's

Floated Ceiling / Floor

Impact sound (footfall) is a common complaint and can be reduced with decoupling measures applied to either the offending floor or the ceiling below. Existing floors typically rate IIC 35-45.

Green Glue

Applied between two sheets of drywall, plywood or any commonly used building materials in new construction and remodeling, effectively reducing noise transfer from one room to another.

Isolation Clips

Designed for use with various framing designs and applications. Iso clips/hangers decouple drywall in wall/ceiling assemblies. Decoupling is the most effective way to reduce impact sounds.

STC (Sound Transmission Class) - Transmission loss (TL) begins when sound waves strike one side of a partition or assembly (for example, a wall, ceiling, or floor), causing it to vibrate. The vibration travels through the partition and produces a sound on the other side. Some of the vibration energy may be lost during the transmission, which results in TL. High TL means that less sound is produced on the other side of the partition. The STC rating is a single number rating of how well a building partition or assembly reduces airborne sounds transmission from one space to another, thus increasing TL. In short, STC measures how much sound is held inside the room, rather than being transferred to other rooms.

IIC (Impact Insulation Class) - In a multi–level home or business, when a floor covering in one of the upper rooms is impacted, by dropping an object or moving furniture for example, the impact creates a vibration that travels through the floor, subfloor, and through the ceiling to the room below. These vibrations result in unwanted and annoying sounds in those rooms. This is called impact sound transmission. Floor coverings with a high IIC rating help to reduce impact sound transmissions to lower levels, thus reducing or eliminating those bothersome noises. The lowest IIC rated floors/ceiling assemblies come in at around 25 and the highest rated systems can come in at 85 and up.
